MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- New Hampshire's largest electric utility is formally asking state regulators to approve its agreement to buy power from a wood-fired generating plant being proposed for Berlin.

Under the 20-year power purchase agreement announced in June, Public Service of New Hampshire would purchase the energy and generating capacity produced by Laidlaw Berlin BioPower. The plant is planned for the site of the former Fraser pulp mill.

PSNH says the plant is expected to create 40 permanent jobs and enough energy for more than 60,000 homes.

A formal request for approval was submitted Monday to the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission.
