HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- South Mississippi Electric Power Association will buy a 17.5 percent stake in Mississippi Power Co.'s coal-fired, electric-generating plant in the Kemper County.

The Hattiesburg-based power association announced the decision Wednesday.

SMEPA general manager/CEO Jim Compton says in a statement that the association needs new generating capacity to meet its growing power demand in south Mississippi. He says the Kemper County plant would provide that.

SMEPA provides wholesale power to its 11 member-owned electric power associations serving 406,000 homes and businesses in 56 counties.

The proposed 582-megawatt plant is expected to begin generating power by 2014, according to Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of the Atlanta-based Southern Co.
