Investigators got their first look Friday at the U.S. Steel coke oven battery damaged by an explosion Wednesday.
Structural damage and the fear of explosive gases in the Clairton Plant's B Battery prevented Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators from entering earlier. OSHA has six months to complete its investigation. Twenty people were injured in the explosion.
Three remained hospitalized yesterday in critical condition at UPMC Mercy where two others were in fair condition. A sixth was in good condition at UPMC McKeesport. Jefferson Regional Hospital, West Penn Allegheny Health System and U.S. Steel declined to say whether other workers remain hospitalized.
